Privacy Policy
Parlance · Last updated: September 2, 2026
Parlance helps you practice speaking a language out loud. This policy explains what data the app handles and why. We keep it deliberately small: there is no account, no name, and no email required to use the app.
What we collect
- Voice recordings. When you do a speaking rep, the app records your microphone audio so it can be transcribed and given feedback. Recordings are also kept on your device so you can play them back (Before/After).
- Transcripts & practice data. The text of what you said, naturalness feedback, scores, streaks, and the phrases you’re working on.
- An anonymous device ID. On first launch the app creates a random, anonymous identifier to save your progress and enforce fair-use limits. We do not require or collect your name, email, or a login.
- Basic analytics. Anonymous, aggregate usage events (e.g. “a session started”) to understand how the app is used. No advertising or cross-app tracking.
- Subscription status. Whether you have an active subscription. Payments are handled by Google Play; we never see your card details.
How your voice is processed
To transcribe your speech and generate feedback and natural-sounding audio, your recordings and/or transcripts are sent to the service providers below. Each processes your data only to provide its part of the service, and we do not sell your data.
- OpenAI — speech-to-text transcription of your reps.
- Anthropic (Claude) — naturalness feedback and coaching text.
- Cartesia — text-to-speech (the natural voice you hear).
- Appwrite — backend, anonymous identity, and progress/audio storage.
- RevenueCat & Google Play — subscription management and purchase validation.
- Deepgram / LiveKit — real-time speech-to-text and audio transport, only if you use live conversation features.
How we use your data
- Transcribe and grade your speaking so we can give you feedback.
- Save your progress, streaks, and phrasebook so they’re there next time.
- Enforce fair-use limits and run subscriptions.
- Understand, in aggregate, how the app is used so we can improve it.
Data retention
- On-device recordings and progress stay until you delete them or uninstall the app.
- Cloud progress is tied to your anonymous ID and kept while the app is in use.
- Audio sent to the providers above is handled per their own retention policies.
Your choices & how to delete your data
- You can deny microphone access, but the core speaking features won’t work without it.
- In the app, open Settings → Delete my data to permanently erase your recordings, progress, and phrasebook — both on your device and on our servers.
- Uninstalling the app removes on-device data.
- You can also email us to request deletion of any data tied to your anonymous ID.
Data deletion
Delete your Parlance data
To delete your Parlance data, open the app → Settings → Delete my data.
This removes your progress, recordings history, and saved phrasings. If any data is retained, it is only the minimum needed for security, fraud prevention, or legal compliance, and it is deleted within 30 days.
Delete my dataSecurity
Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS). Access to backend data is restricted. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your data.
Children
Parlance is not directed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
International transfers
The providers above may process data on servers outside your country. By using the app you consent to that processing to deliver the service.
Changes
We may update this policy; material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above.
